Should you Enable Blogger Dynamic Views? - Software bazar

Dynamic views
Blogger has now officially introduced Dynamic views for all blogs by default. Now you can change the layout of your custom template into different shapes. A dynamic view is an automated code that rearranges your div areas and automatically changes the default style sheet settings into different flavours and colours. In short it provides your readers with better readability. This new feature helps you to arrange your posts, comment body and sidebar in different orientation. It arranges them into either a stream of thumbnail images or table containing columns of your latest posts. However this new feature has some advantages as well as some drawbacks which I have shared below.

How to Enable dynamic View For your blog?

  1. Go To blogger > Design > Template Designer
  2. Now you have 7 different layout options namely classic, Flipcard, magazine, mosaic, sidebar, snapshot, Timeslide.
  3. Choose the one you like and hit the "Apply to Blog" button at the top-right corner
  4. Done!

Advantages of Dynamic Views

This dynamic view has the best advantage of being compatible with all major browsers such as Mozilla, IE8 and Chrome and Safari. It also uses light theme that tremendously helps in reducing your blog load time. The layout are perfectly coded so each widget will remain at its position and wont interrupt neighboring widgets during load time. Stylesheet is the one officially provided by blogger and it rarely contains any image so again helps your blog to load quickly. Blogs with this feature enabled are better browsed, bookmarked and viewed even on smart phones.

Disadvantages of Dynamic Views

You don't have complete control over the appearances of your widgets and post body. While applied most widgets stop working and are misaligned. No special attention is paid to sidebar section. All widgets get replaced or deleted. The sponsor area and subscription area disappears. Again applying it though provides you with main delightful bonuses but if you are running a professional blog with ads on it then better quit this feature. However if you are running a personal diary or non-commercial blog then you can surely go for it in order to let your fans enjoy different flavors of your site.
I hope this little info proves helpful to most of you.

Disadvantages Of "Blogger Template Designer" Templates - SOFTWARE BAZAR

Template-DesignerShould you use the Designer templates provided by Blogger? This is a popular question today. The most logical answer to it is that what seems attractive from outside doesn't necessarily has to be attractive inside also. The beautiful design templates that many bloggers have started using though seem good in look and feel and easy to edit using the "Template Designer" functionality but there are some serious drawbacks and problems link to them which you must know. I have listed all the possible disadvantages below.

Excessive Use Of Dynamic Coding & Variables

Blogger Templates are designed using CSS and HTML and programmed with XML and JavaScript. All unofficial templates use these basic languages to create a blogger template. These coding can easily be edited, understood and played with. All MBT tools and tutorials are based on these basic coding. The new Blogger templates however is using a more difficult and complex dynamic language which is responsible for providing the users with easy software  editing option. i.e. The users can edit the font colors, sizes, link colors, background colors etc using the Template Designer Tool. Though it may sound good but the drawback of these auto options is that your entire template style sheet properties are declared using variables.
  • In easy words a variable links several part of your CSS together and if you change the variable value the effect will be applied to each and every CSS class. In short for Newbie bloggers and even for us, editing the template becomes tough as you don't see constant values rather weird symbols like these:
/* Header
----------------------------------------------- */
.header-outer {
  background: $(header.background.color) $(header.background.gradient) repeat-x scroll top left;
  _background-image: none;
  color: $(header.text.color);
  -moz-border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
  -webkit-border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
  -goog-ms-border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
  border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
}
.Header img, .Header #header-inner {
  -moz-border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
  -webkit-border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
  -goog-ms-border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
  border-radius: $(header.border.radius);
}
.header-inner .Header .titlewrapper,
.header-inner .Header .descriptionwrapper {
  padding-left: $(header.padding);
  padding-right: $(header.padding);
}
.Header h1 {
  font: $(header.font);
  text-shadow: 1px 1px 3px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.3);
}
.Header h1 a {
  color: $(header.text.color);
}
.Header .description {
  font-size: 130%;
}

The above class is the CSS code for styling the Header.  You can clearly see the variables indicated by the dollar sign ($) Now suppose if you wish to edit the background image of your header or change the border colours, font style etc. then how can you set the values when everything is in variables? Of course you can do that if you have some prior knowledge of web languages but this would be difficult to new bloggers.
  • The widget code is also programmed differently using Macro:param tags. See this code,
<aside>
          <macro:include id='main-column-left-sections' name='sections'>
            <macro:param default='0' name='num' value='0'/>
            <macro:param default='sidebar-left' name='idPrefix'/>
            <macro:param default='sidebar' name='class'/>
            <macro:param default='true' name='includeBottom'/>
          </macro:include>
          </aside>

This is the new way of adding dynamic tags to your widgets so that they could be edited directly using "Template designer". Previously the widget <b:section> tags were used which was easy to understand and replace as compared to this.
  • Further simple tags like <body> has been messed up into something like this,
<body expr:class='&quot;loading&quot; + data:blog.mobileClass'>
In all blogger tutorials we always mention <body> tag and it will now turn a headache for new bloggers to find the same <body> tag in the new template designs.

Conclusion:

In a nut shell as a web designer myself I can only advise you all to kindly stick to custom templates which are far better coded and optimized compared to blogger templates. With custom templates you have complete command over your layout coding and doesn't have to reply on the template Designer tool. You can apply all blogger tutorial tricks to your custom templates easily and can better implement them. I felt it important to discuss this topic as most of you were facing problems in applying the tuts and tricks. Hope this make things clear.

Adding Images for the Lightbox Viewer

Now you have added the scripts and styles needed for the lightbox.Next part is to add our images..
You can also add captions to your images and also group multiple images into albums. First upload your photo using the blogger photo upload tool.Now switch to the edit html view from the post editor
See the instructions in these images. (Click to view a bigger version.. :))
imageimage
Make sure that you delete the -h from s1600-h .Now you should be able to see the image(which you uploaded) in an overlay LightBox
Options Explained...
adding rel="lightbox" title="Your image Caption" will create a lightbox viewer for the single image.
Demo of a Single Image

Creating an album with light box

If you are making an album out of multiple images, then add rel="lightbox[albumname]" title="Your Image Caption"  to each of the images present in that album. Images with the same albumname will constitute a single Light box overlay, and you can traverse through the album using the Next and Previous Buttons. Images in an album can obviously have different captions, but a common albumname. You can make multiple albums in a single post by choosing different album names.
Demo of a Light Box Album

Did you notice that your keyboard arrow keys can be used to navigate through the album? :) I hope this would be very useful for those who own a photography blog.If you have any troubles in implementing this,you can surely contact me via comments or @ Blogger Forums. If you are reading this in a feed reader,the Demos won’t be displayed. To see the demos, visit the actual post page

Home Templates How to Contact Add icon / picture to Labels and Links in Blogger Sidebar - Software Bazar

This way, you can make your Blogger XML template Links (Labels and all other links) look nicer. Or not. Depends what you like. So here's what you have to do.
This is an example, and remember, you can add whatever picture you like. Also take this one, if you like it...

We've added the black arrow to our labels to make them distinguish a bit more. First, you have to prepare your picture (icon, image). Choose the one you like, but keep in mind:

  • keep the pics small size 15 x 15 (px). smaller is also alright ....
  • save your pics as ".png" files when you edit them in editor (so they blend with template background)
  • you don't have to use " .png" format if the background of icon (picture) is the same color as your template background
  • upload your picture to a free web host services (Photobucket, Picasa, TinyPic...)

Ok. Now the codes. Back up your template. Then go to:
DASHBOARD ► LAYOUT ► EDIT HTML ► find the following part of code:
.sidebar ul {
list-style:none;
margin:0 0 0;
padding:0 0 0;
}
.sidebar li {
margin:0;
padding-top:0;
padding-$endSide:0;
padding-bottom:.25em;
padding-$startSide:15px;
text-indent:-15px;
line-height:1.5em;
}
Delete that (all of it), and replace it with this:
.sidebar ul {
list-style:none;
margin:0 0 0;
padding:10px 0 0;
}
.sidebar ul li {
background:url("http://i33.tinypic.com/332b6dt.jpg") no-repeat 2px .25em;
margin:0;
padding:0 0 3px 16px;
margin-bottom:2px;
text-indent:7px;
line-height:1.3em;
}
In the orange, you can see a URL of picture used in this tutorial. Just replace the URL address in red with URL of your hosted picture.
Save Settings. And that's it.

NOTE:

  • tutorial is made in Minima Blogger template, your code may be a little different, but the idea is the same (just find the ".sidebar ul" and ".sidebar li" , and replace them with code above)
  • these settings doesn't apply for "Archive" widget
  • "text-indent:7px;" - you can change the distance between text and icon with this (change 7 into higher to increase distance)
  • "line-height:1.3em;" - change the vertical space (line height) between links
  • you can add some borders (line) between individual links (border-bottom:1px solid $bordercolor;)
Smile!

How to change post title background color with template designer

"And how can I give my post title a colour background?"

The first thing I thought of trying is to go to LAYOUT > FONTS AND COLORS as described in my previous post Changing fonts and colors for New Blogger (xml).

However, Blogger for better or for worse is constantly evolving and the LAYOUT tab is no more, replaced by a DESIGN tab and apparently have moved the template designer from Blogger in Draft to standard Blogger.

I believe that it is still possible to edit the template direct to add CSS (Cascading Style Sheet to control the post title background but found that Blogger Template Designer has provided a "Advanced" option to do that via the template designer with INSTANT PREVIEW. And apparently some of the functions of the new Blogger Template Designer can be used even if the template you are using for your blog has not been designed with Blogger Template Designer
